Home may be where the heart is, but it also is where the hazards are.

A survey of 1,000 Americans revealed startling statistics indicating that many of us are at risk of incurring injuries in our own homes every day, some of which could even be fatal, according to a recent study by BRK Brands and The Lehigh Group — makers of the First Alert brand and Crawford-branded garage and home workshop organization products, respectively. As proud supporters of the nonprofit Home Safety Council (HSC), First Alert and Crawford are joining with HSC to recognize Home Safety Month in June and help spread the word about potential home hazards and tips for protecting loved ones.

The HSC research reports that Americans suffer nearly 21 million preventable household injuries each year.

“Sadly, many home accidents might have been prevented with proper planning and simple safety precautions,” says Deborah Hanson, director of external affairs for First Alert and The Lehigh Group.

Focusing on some of the most common household hazards, Hanson offers three easy ways to increase the level of safety at home:

Be armed with alarms
Installing smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) alarms will immediately help improve the safety of your home and family. According to the HSC, alarms that detect smoke cut the risk of fire-related fatalities nearly in half.

Although the BRK/Lehigh survey revealed 95 percent of Americans have smoke alarms in their homes, the study also showed that one in 10 Americans have never changed the batteries. Further, more than half have dangerously silenced smoke detectors by removing batteries or removing entire units from walls or ceilings.

“After installing alarms, it is critical to check them regularly to make sure they are in good working condition,” says Meri-K Appy, president of the HSC. “We advise homeowners to test alarms monthly and to install fresh batteries at least once a year. Also, if smoke alarms are more than 10 years old, replace them. Home Safety Month, in June, is a great reminder to test alarms and replace as needed.”

The BRK/Lehigh study revealed even more alarming findings about Americans’ use — or lack thereof — of CO alarms. Despite nearly daily media reports of deaths and injuries from CO poisoning, nearly half — 47 percent — of all U.S. homeowners do not have CO alarms in their homes.

“Consumers are generally more aware of the dangers of home fires because fire is something they can see, feel and understand,” says Hanson. “Carbon monoxide is especially dangerous because it attacks without warning and can be deadly.”

Known as “the silent killer,” CO exposure is the No. 1 cause of accidental poisoning in the U.S. The colorless, odorless gas can originate from anything that burns a fossil fuel — such as a gas furnace, stove, water heater, barbeque grill, wood-burning fireplace or car.

For the best protection smoke alarms and CO alarms (or a combination unit) should be installed on every level of the home (including the basement) and in every bedroom or sleeping area. For whole home protection, Hanson suggests interconnected alarms, which signal alarms through multiple alarm stations in the home if a threat is detected in a single room. This gives residents more time to react and get everyone to safety. First Alert’s ONELINK wireless offerings provides homeowners the protection of interconnected alarms without needing to call an electrician to install them in the home’s electrical system.

Extinguish fear (and flames)
Another home safety must-have, according to Hanson, is a fire extinguisher, especially critical during the early stages of a fire. Still, more than a quarter of Americans report not owning a fire extinguisher, according to the BRK/Lehigh survey. And, more than one-third of those who do own a traditional home extinguisher say they would not feel “very confident” operating it should a fire ignite.

One easy-to-operate solution is Tundra Fire Extinguishing Spray. Effective on cooking oil, fabric, wood and electrical fires, this 14-ounce point-and-spray can covers a wider surface area and provides users with more time to fight a fire than conventional fire extinguishers.

Get a grip on garage dangers
When it comes to home safety, one of the most often overlooked areas of the home also is one of the most dangerous. Each year, the garage is the site of thousands of unintentional injuries ranging from punctures and poisoning to fatal falls.

According to the BRK/Lehigh survey, nearly four in 10 Americans have tripped over an item in their cluttered garage; more than a quarter have hit an object when opening a vehicle door; and 22 percent have accidentally hit or run over something when parking.

Hanson suggests giving your garage a quick safety makeover with these tips courtesy of the HSC:

* Store shovels, rakes, lawn chairs, gardening tools, bikes and other sharp and large objects on the wall and out of high-traffic areas.

* Store ladders horizontally. This prevents tipping and discourages children from climbing on them.

* Make sure poisonous products have child-resistant caps, are clearly labeled and are stored out of sight and reach of children.

* Keep floors and steps clear of clutter and immediately clean up grease and spills.

* Mount a fire extinguisher and an emergency preparedness kit in the garage and make sure every family member knows where they are and how to use them.

In this article I will give you information on the Stun Master Telescopic Stun Baton so you can make an informed decision before making a purchase. I will lay out the features, operations, and test results.

Description:
· The Stun Master Stun Baton starts out 13″ long and expands to 21″. It is black in color, comes with a finger grip handle, holster, alarm and flashlight.

Features:
· 800,000 volts, makes it one of the most powerful stun batons on the market today.
· Holster with Velcro closer. Fits on any belt.
· No batteries required. It comes with its own charger. When you purchase this unit it comes with a 30% charge and is ready to use out of the box. Plug it in for 10 hours and it is fully charged ready for action.
· Flash light
· 120 Decibel alarm is equivalent to a jet engine.
· Lifetime Warranty

Operation:
· The Stun Master Telescopic Stun Baton must be removed from its case to operate.
· Once un-holstered one finger is all it takes to pull the switch and watch it expand from 13″ to 21″ of shocking power.
· You won’t have to worry about someone taking it from you; when it is expanded no matter where they grab along the shaft it will light them up with 800,000 volts. If the attacker grabs you the shock doesn’t transfer. This unit will shock through ½” of cloths.
· After you are finished with the unit, lightly tap the end on the ground to retract it.

Test Results:

· Battery test: I laid the stun device on a shelf in the office and asked everyone (10 people) to pull the trigger once a day; after 2 months, it still had plenty of power. We didn’t use the flash light or alarm during the testing, use of those will deplete the battery faster depending on use. Keep in mind when testing your stun device you are dry firing it and you should only use 1 second bursts not to damage the unit. When pushed against an assailant’s body pull the trigger as needed.

· Shock test: It is always a task trying to get Volunteers for these tests. Luckily we just hired a new guy that thought he was 10 feet tall and bullet proof. He soon found out he wasn’t all that tough against the Stun Baton. I expanded the unit out and he tried to grab it away from me. Let’s just say he was on the ground in about 2 seconds screaming like a baby. I think it is safe to say that it gave him the shock of a lifetime. I’m not sure if he will volunteer next time.

Conclusion:
This unit is perfect for strolls in the park, walks around the neighborhood, night watchman, security guards, and doorman to name a few. I would recommend this unit as personal security device. Remember the best time to learn your lesson about personal security and self defense is before something happens.

During these hardships, we have learned to expect the unexpected and to be ready for anything.

With this in mind, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security has declared September National Preparedness Month in an effort to educate people about natural and national disaster preparedness and to motivate families to plan ahead. In support of this year’s “Ready Campaign,” First Alert and The Lehigh Group, makers of home safety and security products, offer some simple tips for preparing your home and family to face unexpected emergencies.

“You never know when disaster may strike, so having a safety plan in place is the best way to prepare your family to face crises with confidence,” says Deborah Hanson, director of external affairs for First Alert and The Lehigh Group. “A few minutes of planning today can save valuable time and the lives of loved ones down the road.”

1. Create a preparedness kit
When preparing for an emergency or potential disaster, basic survival items like fresh water and non-perishable foods are often at the top of the list. Just as important are necessities like blankets, a first aid kit, transistor radio, flashlights, batteries, cell phone with charger, prescription medications, cash or traveler’s checks and even a can opener.

Extra items such as tools, matches and a compact, easy-to-use fire extinguisher should also be included in your safety kit. The new Tundra fire extinguishing spray offers a familiar aerosol design and operation with no pin to pull or lever to squeeze — making it less intimidating to operate than a standard fire extinguisher. These items should be kept in a convenient, secure and dry location in the basement or another area of the home with no outside windows.

2. Set alarms
Carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning incidents escalate during hurricane season and heavy wind storms due to more frequent power outages when homeowners turn to fuel-burning generators or other fuel sources to cook, light, cool or heat their homes. To protect your family from this “silent killer,” CO alarms should be installed throughout the home, including one on each level and outside every sleeping area.

3. Store valuables in a “safe” place
Even if you live in the safest town in America, having a safe at home can prove a wise investment when it comes to natural disasters. Through fire or flood, a safe can help protect important documents, family photos and sentimental keepsakes, as well as jewelry and other valuables. For the ultimate protection, look for a safe that is both fire resistant and waterproof, not just water resistant. Be sure to keep the combination in a secure place and share the location only with trusted family members and friends. Some safes offer fingerprint technology that recognize up to 10 different prints — allowing for quick and easy access during an emergency.

4. Keep security front and center
Doors and windows are particularly vulnerable spots in a home during a major storm or national disaster. Proper storm doors can protect exposed areas of the home from wind, precipitation and debris. For homes and businesses, vertical window guards like those offered by Leslie Locke help to keep flying debris from breaking glass and exposing a home’s interior to outside elements. Security screen doors and window guards also can help keep homes safe from unwanted intrusion.

5. Secure outdoor items
High winds can take a toll on the outside of a home. At the first sign of danger, secure outdoor items using rope or other cordage products to tie down outdoor furniture, plants, decorative items and more. A new rope innovation called Cordzilla offers bungee-style stretch with vinyl-coated hooks that help securely tie down items without scratching their surfaces.

You see the ads on TV all the time for home security companies with their $99.00 install special. Sounds great for the peace of mind and all that! They don’t tell you about the monthly charges of $49.95 and more and a 3 year contract. That adds up to a ton of money for sure.

You see the ads on TV all the time for home security companies with their $99.00 install special. Sounds great for the peace of mind and all that! They don’t tell you about the monthly charges of $49.95 and more and a 3 year contract. That adds up to a ton of money for sure.

If you happen to have lots of dough lying around you can get your own security guards or ultra modern surveillance system or guard dogs or…..well you get the idea. Home security is really only limited by how much money you want to spend.

A burglary happens every 15 seconds and annually 17% of all domiciles were violated by a burglar. That means on average that if you stay in your home for six years-on average- you will be burglarized-not a pleasant thought.

Of course you can do many things to your property to make it less attractive to a burglar. When the bad guys go ’shopping’ for their next victim they look for an easy mark. They don’t want any trouble.

Here are some inexpensive ways to help prevent home burglaries and provide some security for your most valued possession-your home.

Motion Activated Spotlights–are easy to install, relatively inexpensive lighting systems activated by motion detectors. One of the things burglars don’t like is LIGHT.

Signs For an Alarm Company–if they see a sign that the property is protected by an alarm system even if you don’t have one they are much less likely to target the home.

Neighborhood Watch Program Signs–if you don’t have a Neighborhood Watch Program set up-start one.

Dummy Surveillance Cameras–dummy surveillance cameras have a proven track record in reducing.

NRA Stickers–send a signal to a potential burglar that an occupant of the home may be armed.

Window and Door Alarms–are set to trigger an alarm if they are opened. The bad guys don’t need/want the attention.

On the medium side expense wise are a wired indoor/outdoor Infrared IP Surveillance System at less than $400.00 and the USB DVR 4 Channel Surveillance System at less than $500.00. Both of these options are easy to use and install giving you the added capability of watching your home from any where on the internet.

The big thing though is you can do all of this yourself for a lot less money than the security companies will charge you. A great price for some peace of mind and some protection for your most valuable asset-your home!

Over the years most homeowners can expect to experience at least one form of water damage to their home. It could be their washing machine hose that splits, their pipes that freeze and burst, the dishwasher that leaks, toilet that overflows, or water heater that fails.

Any one of these conditions can lead to expensive property damage, and destruction of personal belongings such as photographs, furniture or computer data – items that are often irreplaceable.

According to the Insurance Information Institute, more than seven times as many insurance claims are caused by water damage and freezing (17 per cent) than by theft (2 per cent). Of those water related claims, 60 per cent were caused by faulty indoor appliances or plumbing leaks, 25 per cent were caused by heavy rain or flooding and 11 per cent caused by sewers or sump-pumps that overflowed.

Preventing a water leak from causing extensive damage is even more crucial now with the trend towards homeowners investing thousands of dollars in their basements creating home theatres, play rooms, guest rooms and laundry rooms.

These flooding events can lead to several inconveniences and unexpected costs such as having to relocate while the problem is cleaned up (in severe cases), having to replace damaged items and most importantly dealing with the health problems from the mold and mildew caused by the water damage.

“Flooding events often go undetected for hours causing extensive damage to your home and personal belongings,” said Patrice De Luca, vice president of marketing and business development for Reliance Protectron Security Services, a leader in home security services who offer, among their suite of products and services, affordable solutions to help thwart the threat of water damage.

According to De Luca today’s security systems are capable of monitoring much more than just intrusion detection devices like motion detectors, door/window contacts and glassbreaks. Flood sensors, water flow switches, temperature sensors and many other devices can be installed and linked to a remote monitoring centre that protects homes 24 hours a day to help minimize and, if detected early enough (like for a sump pump with a high water level sensor), prevent losses due to environmental factors with specially trained professional operators standing by and dispatching appropriate emergency services if required.

De Luca says “the latest technology in security systems (when monitored by a professional monitoring centre) can even allow for the monitoring and detection of water damage in your home from a distance by wireless transmission (TeleGARD) on your cell phone or PC at work for example.” More information on protecting your home while you’re away is available online at www.protectron.com.

(ARA) – In bad economic times, it’s understandable for people to worry more about the security of their homes and families. With police departments across the country being forced to cut their budgets, homeowners may feel anxious about the safety in their community.

“With so many people out of work, many Americans are worrying about a possible increase in burglaries, home invasions and other types of crimes that target the safety of their homes,” says Charles Hemphill, a home security products expert for Montgomery Ward. “People are spending less discretionary income and more time in the home. Yet few families have the budget to install a high-tech security system and pay the monthly subscription fee to protect their peace of mind.”

Improving your home’s security doesn’t have to be an expensive job left to professionals. With a few simple and affordable do-it-yourself improvements, you can improve security and address your anxiety over possible risks to your home and family.

Make Your Home Look Unattractive to Burglars

Burglars commonly look for homes that appear unoccupied, or offer concealment for their crime, such as overgrown bushes or shrubs that block the view of the front door from the road. If you’re going away on vacation for a few days, be sure to suspend mail and newspaper delivery; an overflowing mailbox or multiple papers lying on the driveway alert thieves that you’re not at home.

Ensure the exterior of your home is well-lit. Always leave the front porch light on at night — all night — and install time-activated sensors to turn lights on when you’re away. If you prefer not to have lights on outside all night, consider installing motion-activated lights that will switch on when someone approaches your home. Motion-activated LED Lights, available online at Montgomery Ward, mount easily on steps, porches, balconies, gates and decks. The lights are waterproof and a passive infrared motion sensor detects movement in the dark and shines five bright, white LED lights for 12 seconds — long enough to scare off potential intruders. Or, for battery-free operation, try motion-activated solar-powered lights.

Don’t Make Access Easy for Them

The front door and the garage door are the two most common access points for thieves. Never leave either unlocked and be sure your front door has a deadbolt lock — the kind that can only be opened with a key from either side. If your garage is attached and offers direct access into your house, never leave the garage door open for an extended period of time and always lock — again, with a deadbolt — the door that leads from the garage into your house.

If you must leave your car sitting on your driveway overnight, always lock it and never leave a spare key or garage door opener inside the car. Thieves know that by breaking into your car, they may find a way to access your home.

Beef Up Security with Simple, Cost-effective Devices

“There are many simple-to-install, economical devices that can help enhance your home’s security,” says Hemphill. Here are a few items, all available online from Montgomery Ward, which can improve your home security in just a few minutes:

* Telespy Intrusion Detector – The detector looks and functions like a normal telephone, but when you’re away you can set its special motion detector sensor to alert you when the device detects motion inside your home. The device calls a number you preprogram into it — a cell, office phone or friend’s home phone – and allows you to listen to what’s going on inside your house for up to 30 seconds.

* Replace your garage door opener remotes with a Keyless Entry System on the outside of the garage. The system reads your fingerprint to identify you as someone authorized to enter the garage. You can program the system to recognize up to 10 people’s fingerprints. Don’t want to get out of the car to open the garage door? Mount the system on a post beside the driveway so that you can reach it from the driver’s side window.

* Still want a home security system, but hesitant to take on the costs associated with professional installation? It’s possible to create your own low-cost security system, tailored to your needs, with programmable components that interface with one another. Start with a command center, available for less than $35 and add components to monitor doors, windows and garage entries for around $20 per component.

Medical alarm systems that are sometimes also referred to as medical alert systems are able to do a lot to protect your loved ones by providing necessary information to the emergency services and that too by working non-stop and so, they are well worth using in case your loved one has become too weak to fend for them or because severe ill health requires an alarm system in place to ensure their continued safe health. Essentially, medical alarm systems are small medical devices used for personal emergencies and they work seven days in the week and twenty-four hours in the day.

Wireless And Very Small

When the medical alarm systems sound off, it alerts medical professionals that their patient requires immediate attention and thus cuts down the lead time in providing quick relief. Most modern medical alarm systems are wireless and very small, and in fact, the modern devices being used today are so small that they can even be worn like pendants, necklaces or even as a wrist watch and what’s more, even on key chains. Some people even use them as medical alert bracelets.

To ensure that the wearer does not accidentally do them unwanted harm, most medical alarm systems are also made waterproof. What’s more, using such medical alarm systems can be a real boon for the elderly who are able to derive a number of benefits from these tiny devices including making them achieve greater independence while also not compromising on their safety. Also, these medical alarm systems provide emergency services through issuing of a timely alert and thus help to a great deal in improving the quality of life of the wearer.

Another positive to using medical alarm systems is that they are very easy to use and they can easily be set up without much fuss or bother since, to make them work, you don’t need more than a reliable telephone line in your residence through which the alarm connects to the emergency services whenever the need for emergency or receiving other kind of help arises.

Basically, medical alarm systems work in a simple manner and they are activated whenever the wearer presses on an emergency button which in turn alerts the medical alert system which causes information to be passed onto the console. This in turn causes the system to contact the twenty-four hour response center or dials the emergency contacts that the wearer had provided to the alert system. In case there is no response from either end, the medical alarm system will then dial emergency numbers continuously, or even dial 911 whenever necessary.

The bottom line is that medical alarm systems are not mere conveniences, but are aids to the infirm that help them remain active, independent as well as gives them peace of mind knowing that they will receive timely aid in case as soon as it becomes necessary.

The company you’ve come to depend on for quality large and small appliances also makes quality home security systems. Basically, if a device has wires in it, GE will make their own version of it. With advances in wireless technology, GE alarm systems are more versatile and more affordable for homes, businesses and property. You can find GE alarm systems in apartment complexes, government offices and military installations as well as private homes.

Connected Home

If you are looking for GE alarm systems for an individual home, then you will be looking in a category GE calls “connected home systems”. This doesn’t mean your house has to be physically connected to other houses in order for the GE alarm systems to work – it just means that with your laptop or control panel, you can stay connected to what’s going on all over the house.

Most GE alarm systems for individual homes are now easy and small enough to not require professional installation. This means you can install it yourself at your time and convenience. At least you don’t have to wait around all day staring at the clock waiting for “the guy” to show up. You receive instructions written in modern English instead of “geek-ese”.

There are several components to GE alarm system for homes. You get a big box of electrical fun. If you’ve ever put together a model car or anything from Ikea, then you already have the skills to put together GE alarm systems. If you know how to program your DVD player, then you DEFINITELY have the skills to put your new alarm kit together.

You get a tower (which looks like your computer tower), shelving, power assembly, relays and all kinds of wires with flashing buttons. Before you get any alarm system, you should check to be sure you have the technical specifications needed to run your new system. You also get telephone numbers for technical and customer support in case you run into installation problems or have questions about the system in general.

Where To Buy

You can buy GE alarm systems directly from GE’s website, but many prefer to buy from GE vendors, especially if the vendor offers little extras like free shipping that GE doesn’t offer. There are many home security stores online that sell GE alarm systems and offer extra customer support. There are systems available for sale on eBay, but you don’t get any technical support with them.

Believe it or not, in your very own town, there is probably a car being stolen right now right in the middle of the day or night. It seems that car thieves do not care about being out in the middle of public or it being daylight anymore, as they will steal a car no matter what. And since most people tend to mind their own business and not really pay attention to what other people are doing, someone could hot wire a car with a large group right around them. This is why getting the viper car alarm system is so important as this will help make sure your car does not end up taken.

The moment someone tries to break into your car when your viper car alarm system is set, they and everyone around them will hear the car alarm go off. The viper car alarm system makes so much noise that those around the car will not be able to help but to look to see what is going on. And because of this, thieves tend to look for the viper car alarm system sticker on cars and if they see it, they are likely to just keep walking. The sticker itself serves as great protection because of the reputation that the viper car alarm system has.

Installing It

While it is always great to try and do things yourself, this is one task that should only be attempted by someone who has experience with this sort of thing. The best thing to do when it comes to wanting a viper car alarm system installed is to take your car to a dealership and have them put it in. This is the best way to make sure that it is done fast and done correctly because there is no point in having the viper car alarm system installed if it is not going to work right and protect your car and your belongings.

Because so many dealerships charge different prices for the installation of a viper car alarm system, your best bet is to shop around. These systems are not cheap so a large bill should be expected but you could possibly save some money on labor costs or by finding a place that is holding a sale. By doing a little research, you will not only make sure that you are not getting ripped off, but that you are getting a good deal on your viper car alarm system.
