One of the less well-advertised aspects of the PC and Internet revolution is its impact on home automation security systems.

A combination of software and hardware can provide video surveillance cameras with intelligent tracking. They can, for example, come on when you leave the home and turn off when you arrive. They can be programmed to follow movements or sounds detected.

Light timers, to choose another example, have been on the market for decades. But in times past these were simple timing devices that turned the lights on at a pre-set time and turned them off at another. With the addition of computer technology, they can now be programmed to switch off and on at random times and days. That adds an extra layer of reality simulation that helps fool the bad guys.

Some systems have the drawback that when the power goes, the system goes. Thieves can easily turn the power off to your home at the street or by flipping off unprotected circuit breakers on a panel on an exterior wall. That can disable any computer, cameras, lights and more that you’ve installed to protect your home.

But that need not be the case. A simple battery backup system, ranging in price from $50 to a few hundred dollars, can provide a few minutes or even a few hours of enough power to keep the PC, and one or two lights and cameras functioning. When thieves see that their scheme to disable your system failed, they are more likely to pick another target. Systems that can be built for a few thousand dollars could power your whole home for hours.

Automation can disable locks at certain hours or under programmable conditions. That means, if you’re not home but the thief has a key, it’s unusable. That key could have been obtained by an unscrupulous babysitter who is a partner to the thief, for example. That leaves them in the (unplanned) position of having to break in. That again increases the odds that they’ll give up and pick a more vulnerable target.

Automated locks can go beyond the traditional key/deadbolt system, though. There are lock systems that work off a combination, which can require a small token only you and family members carry. The combination is changed at random, but synchronized with the token. That means that at any given moment, only you and trusted others have the correct sequence of numbers.Â

Such features have been incorporated into alarm systems, as well. Older-design alarm systems, which are still common, work off a special combination. But that information can be obtained by techniques that are common among identity thieves today. Passwords are often written down, where they can be seen by someone willing to do a little spying. But a token-based system changes the combination every minute, making it possible to disarm it only if you have the token.

Look into the ways technology can help you increase the protection of your home. The costs are often very small compared to what you might lose, and can sometimes be offset by reductions in homeowners insurance premiums.

Home automation systems play an important role among various home security systems. They are especially important when you are away form home on a vacation or on a long trip. They are also irreplaceable if you are working based on a not-standard schedule and you are away from home in the evenings. The reason why home automation systems are so valuable is the fact that they allow you to make your house look occupied when you are actually not at home. Making your house look occupied is an important burglary prevention technique. If a burglar thinks that the owner of the house is away for a while, he or she will most likely believe that there are fewer dangers in trying to break into this house. If a burglar knows that someone is at home most of the time, he or she is a lot less likely to attempt to break into the house.

As we said above, various home automation systems come into play when you are trying to show that someone is at hone while, in fact, you are away from home for a long time. Home automation systems will automatically perform a various array of activities at your house without you having to do anything. For example, they will automatically turn your lights on and off at predetermined times. They can also turn various home appliances on and off. For example, the home automation system will turn your TV or radio on at a specific time in the evening. After some time has passed, it will turn the TV off and 15 or 20 minutes later will also turn the lights off. This creates a perfect illusion that someone is at home, watching TV and then turning the TV off and going to bed. In actuality, however, the owner of the house can be in a completely different location, thousand of miles. This type of system can even be utilized for other needs while you are at home.

Of course, you can ask someone (your friends, neighbors or relative, for example) to turn your lights on and off in the evening, but you cannot ask then for the favor to do this. Doing it several time is not a big deal, but if you are away from your house every evening, you need to find other ways to protect your house and make it look occupied. The home automation system will definitely help in this case and is probably the only thing that can help.

There are several different types of home automation systems. There are mechanical systems that will do the basic activities to automate your lights or your TV. There are also systems that are based on the home automation software. This software allows you to control your lights and home appliances through your personal computer. All you have to do is to install your new software and to follow several simple setup instructions. After you completed your setup process, you will be able to program your automation system to turn your lights, TV, radio and other home appliances on and off at certain preprogrammed times. You can even program your sprinkling system with this type of software. As you can see, the benefits of the home automation software are obvious.

When you are purchasing the software for your home automation system you need to make sure that this software was created by a respectful company with a lot of expertise in the home automation field. Make sure to check the reviews of the software posted by other customers. Also check the requirements of the software to make sure that it will work for your house and can be installed on your personal computer. If you are not sure which software package to select, you can check out various home automation guides to see what vendors are recommended as the best providers of home automation software. You can also talk to the representative of the store where you plan to purchase this software and ask him or her for an advice. Many of these sales reps are familiar with the home automation software and will be able to guide you to the correct section in the store and point out several examples of home automation software packages.
