Thanks for the post of a few of the home security options available to people. I agree, every home needs strong, non-bumpable locks installed by professionals. I would also add that anyone considering a home security system needs to do the research to ensure they find the system to meet their individual needs. A one-size-fits-all system rarely meets the security needs of anyone.

I agree. Monitoring plays a huge role in the effectiveness of a security system. When considering monitoring centers, it's important to do the research. Find out about their valid dispatch rate, their operator to account ratio and their false alarm fine guarantees. Many monitoring centers have false alarm rates in the 94-98% range and expect one person to "watch" 10,000 accounts. Both of these are totally unacceptable. Talk to local police and ask the monitoring center for and check references.

Thanks for the post. I especially appreciate that you encourage people to preplan and not jump into a security system without research and considering personal needs. Too many companies sell one-size-fits all security systems and fail to consider how individual families use their homes.

While I agree wireless security offers many tantalizing benefits, they are not the best option for everyone. Every home security system needs to be custom designed in order to provide 100% protection.

Thanks for the explanation of DVRs. I agree that this technology can add a lot to a home's security. However, I would stress that security cameras need to be monitored in order to be most effective. Without 24/7 monitoring, you may just end up with a video of someone robbing you, but no way to identify the suspect.

I agree, the monitoring makes or breaks the effectiveness of a home security system. That is why it's so important to choose a company that verifies alarms with either audio or video technology. Ask the monitoring company about their valid dispatch rate. Many have false alarm rates in the 94-98% range; this is totally unacceptable. Ask about their operator to account ratio; many have one person "watching" 10,000 accounts, this is simply not possible and puts your home at risk. Never contract with a company that doesn't offer a false alarm fine guarantee. This demonstrates their commitment to your home with valid dispatches.

Thanks for the tips. I think you offer a lot of valid advice. In addition to working with consultants, I would add that it's crucial to find a company with a full guarantee. This needs to cover performance, equipment and labor, emergency service, false alarm fines and a six-month money back guarantee. The guarantee will ensure you are truly protected.

Thanks for the information. While DIY security may be a viable option for some, I urge anyone really serious about protecting their home to find a security company and monitoring center that verifies activations. These companies are experts at installing integrated security and can network your system with security cameras and home automation, allowing you to access your system from any Internet connection. Camera images can also be sent to your cell phone or Twitter account. Never contract with a security company or technology provider without a full guarantee. This proves they stand behind the promises they make.

I agree that a security system in a home with young children needs to be easy to use. This is why it's so important to choose a custom designed system. Rather than a one-size-fits-all approach, custom systems are designed specifically for your family and home. They deliver the best security value and save significant money in terms of false alarm fines, service visits and ongoing support. Also, never purchase any home security technology with out a full six-month money back guarantee.

Thanks for the information. I would add that people need to consider the "holy trinity" of security cameras, lens, light and resolution, when evaluating cameras. Every application is unique and the "right" camera is different based on the individual application. Do your research, set your budget, work with an expert and get a full, six-month money back guarantee.
