Home Security Alarm Monitoring Helps Provide Remote Protection

Published by Author at 2:29 am under Basic Home Security

There is an old question that asks if a tree falls in the forest and no one hears it, does it still make a noise? The same can be said about a burglar alarm. If the alarm sounds and no one hears it, there may as well not be an alarm installed. This is where home security alarm monitoring plays a key role in protecting the home and family from intrusion. Those with homes in remote locations may be too far removed from neighbors to make a local audible alarm effective and home security alarm monitoring will be a necessary part of their security system.

Understand, a company is not going to have someone stand outside your home when you are not there. Rather, they can monitor the alarm electronically, typically through an automatic dialing system that calls the home security alarm monitoring company and sends an electronic signal to explain why the alarm has been activated.

For example, home security alarm monitoring usually includes notification to the company that someone has breached the perimeter of the home or that a fire has broken out and they need to notify the local fire department. Many also include a hand-held device that can be used to signal a medical emergency has occurred and they can send an ambulance to your location.

Costs Vary By Home Security Needs

While most home security alarm monitoring services charge a monthly fee, the biggest difference in the price of the alarm system is the components installed in the home. The dialing service and monitoring will usually cost about the same, but the difference come in when choosing the components for the system. A basic home security burglar alarm will cover all doors and a few windows, but many other products can be added to the mix that can increase the base price of the system.

For example, infrared triggers can be used to protect hallways and other rooms that will set off the alarm if someone walks through the signal. Pressure sensitive pads under carpets as well as motion detectors can be tied into the system, which will add to the basic cost. However, regardless of the number of components in the system, without home security alarm monitoring the alarm will only be heard locally in the home.

Those who want the protection for their valuables when they are not at home will want to consider being connected to a home security alarm monitoring service to make sure the proper first responders are notified when needed.

I agree that having your system monitored can greatly improve the security of your home. However, it is important to understand that not all monitoring companies are created equal. When researching a monitoring company, ask how many accounts the average operator is monitoring (some monitor as many as 10,000) and ask about the rate of good alarms (dispatches on actual burglaries). Also, ask what sort of guarantees the company offers. A quality monitoring company will back up their talk with a false alarm fine guarantee.

You are absolutely right. Many people invest in great technology, but fail to really secure their home by contracting with a reputable monitoring service. When looking for a central station to monitor your home security system, make certain to ask about the operator to account ratio. Many companies have one operator watching 10,000 accounts or more, seriously limiting their ability to watch attentively. Ask about their valid dispatch rate. With false alarm rates across the country running in about 98% you need a company working to change that. Get a false alarm fine guarantee. They can prove they act to reduce false alarms if they will pay the fines for the false alarms they cause. Also, never contract with a company that doesn’t verify signal activations with either audio or video technology. This is easy to do and ensures a more effective (more secure) system.
