Nothing says leave me alone like the presence of a video security camera and most businesses and many homeowners are using them to help deter crime on their property. When a would-be thief walks around a potential home or business looking for ways to gain entry, if they spot a video security camera covering the grounds, chances are they will look for a different location that is lacking in this area.

While professional thieves or those in really desperate situations may not be deterred by a video security camera, the majority of thefts are conducted by amateurs. Those that have previous convictions, especially if based on the use of video images, may be more reluctant to take a chance breaking into a home or businesses that is covered by a video security camera. The camera itself only works to a point. Images from the camera should be visible to would-be burglars so they understand that whatever they do on the property will be recorded.

Most businesses show their customers only a few of the images being recorded from a video security camera, often having three or four times as many cameras than the number of pictures shown on a public view monitor. When a would-be thief realizes that jumping the retailer’s counter to get to the cash register is begin taped, they may think twice before making the lunge.

System Must Be In Proper Working Order

Too many times a business will install a video security camera along with a monitor for their customers to see, making them feel all warm and fuzzy inside. However, too many of those monitors are forgotten during regular housekeeping and are soon covered with dust. When a would-be thief sees a monitor that appears dirty and neglected, they may get the opinion that the rest of the security system is also neglected and figure it is probably not working.

One advantage that many businesses have is the images shown on local news programs can be disguised as to the quality of the pictures. Images often shown on television for example, may appear grainy or out of focus, leading the suspect to think they are unrecognizable. However, images from a quality video security camera will usually be clear, providing positive identification.

Videos from a video security camera are also used to help provide identification of a suspect, if they are not known to the law enforcement. Many times these videos have been broadcast with a clear image of the criminal and the public can use them to make a positive identification.
